Community service and charitable giving began at a very young age for Dorothy Blumenthal.

In 1927, she took office as the Recording Secretary for the National Council of Jewish Women and remained there for more than 60 years, serving in many roles including Director, a position she held until the age of 89.

"I love this city, I was born here, and my mother was born here," she told The ÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø Press matter-of-factly when asked about her lifelong dedication to the city.

In 1971, Dorothy established The Blumenthal Memorial Fund in memory of her husband, the late Abraham Blumenthal, who died in 1968. She asked that the fund be designated for projects which support children and the elderly.

Dorothy died on Nov. 27, 1991. The fund continues to support programming for youth and elderly. Some of the projects it has supported include assisting the YMCA of McKeesport to make its pool accessible to the elderly and the handicapped, and a project by the Holy Family Institute to involve teenage fathers in the raising of their children
